I recently heard RC Sproul talk about a television preacher who watched who uttered the phrase "I don't care what you have done or who you are, God is not angry at you". At first, such a statement may not seem alarming for indeed, we are told in the scriptures that "God is Love". However, we are also told that God's favor towards the creature--that is, whether or not God is outpouring his pleasure upon him or unleashing his mighty wrath--is solely based on whether or not the creature has received the free gift of Christ's atoning work on the cross, which both justifies the sinners punishment as well fulfills the righteous requirements both set forth and required by the law (Romans 3). Scripture is painfully clear that God hates sin (Psalm 5) and that evildoers will not enter the kingdom of God, "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9)". So actually it is quite clear that God is or was angry at all of us, since we all have sinned. But praise God for his grace, in that he has a made a righteousness apart from the law, namely his son Jesus Christ. It is because of His son--and only because of His son--that God is no longer angry at the believer. However, without His son, God's anger is still affectioned toward the creature, which is why Paul states:
"For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a] Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them." (Ephesians 5:5-7)
So it seems that God is indeed angry at the creature, because the creature is a sinner, and sin is wickedness. However, his wrath has been pardoned by those who claim his son Jesus Christ. It is not harsh, it is biblical--and it is true.
